Black History Month: Nova Scotia’s Connection to Sierra Leone

I had the honour of rising in the House of Commons on Friday, February 10th and sharing a bit of Nova Scotia’s fascinating connection to the founding of the African country, Sierra Leone. Founded by freed black slaves that came to Nova Scotia from the United States, these hardy souls were hoping for a new life in Africa. They set sail to the west coast of Africa and founded what is today known as Freetown.
